Ormocanon International is now putting together its resources  in organizing the big 2012 Ormocanon International  Convention in Ormoc city. Volunteer Event Coordinators from Australia, USA and local officers are making their headway by holding their first meeting in Ormoc City this week. The 3 day event is planned to maximize the revenue for the funding of Emergency Rescue Volunteers of Ormoc and the DepEd’s  Alternative  Education Program.

Ormocanon International has approved the projects in the previous year in recognition to the need and importance  of the broad and long term benefits  for  the masses  of Ormoc. These projects caught considerable attention among the officers and members of Ormocanon International based on their personal experience in the city  and the many empirical observations among the population of Ormoc.

The 2012 3-day Convention is an event  for all Ormocanons residing within and outside of Ormoc  (local and those somewhere in the Philippines and the World) to rediscover Ormoc,  a chance to intuitively know  the City and the people, rejoin with families and friends, to know in what role they can help /contribute to the welfare of the city, to be able to unite with other Ormocanons  to create significant charitable projects.

The 3-day event  will entail 1)  Mardi Gras parade of balikbayans, families, contest participants , officers of Ormocanon International Inc,  2) Academic Presentations regarding the State of  the City, its resources, improvements and needs 3)  Shows and Competitions 4) Guided Tours  to Leyte’s points of interst.

The Convention  will be held on June 22,23 and 25. Break on June 24 (St John the Baptist day) for family affairs ,picnics etc. This convention is also timed to draw visitors to Ormoc ‘s Fiesta to help tourism  and the local economy of the city  and nationally through your purchase of airline tickets  to and from the Philippines and domestic travels.

The officers  of Ormocanon International are now soliciting for volunteers ( foreign or local) to augment the present manpower in various committees that will be identified. If you have a talent and experience in event planning, art presentation and design,  accounting , program coordination and advertising please write or email to

2011 Little Feet Protection Program a Success PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ormoc Local
Wednesday, 18 January 2012 02:58

Instead of spending her money for a couple of nights in a nearby vacation resort, Wilma Yahut Phillips- OI  Excecutive Vice President (USA)  and husband Fred Phillips  donated their money  to Ormocanon International for a dedicated purpose of purchasing  shoes for a selected  elementary school  class in Can-Adieng , Ormoc City. While both Wilma and Fred are retired  and has all the time to dispose for their leisure, the couple has always  thought  of ways how they can help the needs  of Ormoc . Wilma who always believes  in  OI’s cause,  has been very consistent  in contributing her  effort  in organizing the  OI conventions  and giving sizable donations. Mr and Mrs  Phillips along with the recommendation  of  Jiggs Maglasang –OI Execcutive Vice President  (Ormoc City) choose Can-Adieng  Elementary School  as the first recipient  of the Little Feet Protection Program.

Little Feet Protection program  has been a campaign  of Ormocanon International  since 2009. The officers and members of OI realized that the importance of good hygiene for the students  which amounts to good heath and good school performance cannot be overemphasized. The many diseases that can be contracted of having bare feet on dirty grounds and possible injuries  can be prevented to a considerable degree. These students are part of the pool of future nation builders. Protecting their feet is a gift to the kids that they can feel under them for many days of the year to come – of comfort and security.

The distribution of the shoes was held around 2011 Christmas to celebrate the spirit of giving by  Ormocanon  International  officers . Jiggs Maglasang , Jocelyn Maglasang –OI Treasurer  and Dawna Regner – OI  Corresponding Secretary along with volunteers put  together their effort in fitting and handing to individual students the gifts of love.

This is a continuing program. Donors for future Shoe giving, please contact the officers of Ormocanon International listed in the officers roster. Ormocanon International accepts cash donations only to enable the local officers in Ormoc purchase locally made products in bulk prices and negating shipping expenses. Donors may elect areas in Ormoc District of their choice depending on accessability and safety may allow.

2011 Christmas Feed-A-Family a Success PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ormoc Local

Again, in its third successive year, Ormocanon International Inc. held its charitable Ormoc feeding program.  Barangay Monterico at the very outskirts of Ormoc became the recipient  of Ormocanon  International  as recommended  by the city’s statistics office.

Similar to the previous years  feeding programs,  direct funding from Sir Ian Quinto has dedicated his allocated birthday expense  for charitable purposes through Ormocanon International.  The parents  Bobby & Beth Quinto  has always bought into the idea that spending  to feed the poor  rather than partying with those  who can afford their own meal  is far more rewarding.  “America is much too well-feed and getting sick, it will help our healthcare system  to have one less party “ said Beth Quinto.  In 2009, Sir Ian’s donation was only targeted to feed a couple hundred  of children. In 2010 the program became Feed –A – Family  and was able to help about 200 Families .

The 2011 Christmas Feed –A-Family in Barrio Monterico  was very well executed by the local volunteers , members and visiting officers of Ormocanon International. Instead of distributing cooked meals for the individuals, packed combinations of few kilos of rice , noodles and canned goods  were distributed to each family who registered with the officials. The actual registered recipients came close to 300 families or nearly 1100 individuals (men, women and children ) . A twin feature of the Christmas Feed –A-Family is the distribution of several boxes of used clothing courtesy of the following : Lilly Eguarras –Pickens  from San Diego also  former Ms ORMOC BALIKBAYAN  & reigning 2011 Beauty Queen ,  Mrs . Filipino American Association  in San Diego, California ; Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center,  Cardiac , Telemetry nurses : Tami Noorian  , May Dean &  Beth Quinto   together  made  tremendous effort in the glazing & trimmings of the Christmas giving by keeping the poor peoples backs warm.  Supplemental monetary contribution for the freight of donations were from Norma Thielman ( OI Auditor ) and Danny Apostol RN of Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

Like every undertaking of Ormocanon International, Mayor Eric Codilla has always been its greatest advocate and supporter. The mayor provided 3 vehicles to move the logistics from Ormoc to Monterico successfully. The determination of the volunteers , members  and officers of OI was  not hampered by the numerous occasion of being mud-stuck  in vehicles because of the terrible road condition and uncooperative weather .  The whole program was made possible by the leadership of Jiggs Maglasang-Ormoc Executive  Vice president and the unrelenting determination of the core officers Dawna Regner, Delia Mclain and Lydia Regner.

This is a continuing program. Donors for future Feeding Program, please contact the officers of Ormocanon International listed in the officers roster. Ormocanon International accepts cash donations only to enable the local officers in Ormoc purchase local products in bulk prices and negating shipping expenses. Donors may elect areas in Ormoc District of their choice depending on accessability and safety may allow.

Ormocanon International Little Feet Protection drive PDF Print E-mail

Local Officer Exec VP Jigs Maglasang  VP Admin and Exec VP Wilma Phillips hatched the idea of giving  a depressed barangay community school shoes for the children. The idea was unanimously approved  during the Officers meeting at the Villa Hotel.  Portion of the funds raised of the 2011 OI balikbayan night, fraction of individual refunds from Miss Ormoc and individual contributions will be used to purchase shoes for the children in a selected school.

Jigs will be administering the purchase and distribution of the shoes to the students. Date and place will be announced when confirmed with the school and barangay officials. This drive stemmed from the old proposed project by Dr. Jimmy Yrastorza to help indigent Ormoc kids who are running around on their bare feet. Many realized that many diseases can be contracted from dirty ground and with the families in poverty, the ailments can turn into a social issue within the city. Ormocanon International in its effort to fill in the gaps and voids in social  issues is campaigning to give relief to the children in need of basic protection for their little feet.

The more shoes we can give , the better. Are there more Ormocanons with few dollars to help? Spare a burger today! What little lighter it makes on your pocket, it is also lighter on your heart and feet as well.
